Why use a Diesel Fuel Additive?

In October 1993, as part of the Clean Air Act, the EPA directed a 90% reduction in the sulfur content of diesel fuel.  The removal of sulfur has caused catastrophic failure of fuel injection systems. The problem is so severe that four engine and equipment manufacturers are voiding warranties for leaks or wear caused by low sulfur diesel.

Cummins, Stanadyne, Bosch and other fuel injector pumps are already suffering catastrophic failure. Injector pump rebuilders are busier than they have ever been.

Cummins: Rubber "0" ring on the throttle rod shrinks allowing the fuel to blow past the seal as it gushes out the side of the pump.

Bosch: Rubber seal on fuel injection head shrinks, allowing fuel to leak past the seal.

Stanadyne: Metering rod in the pump sticks because of reduced lubricity of the fuel, causing the engine to stall.

Caterpillar: Not only do the "0" rings in the fuel injection pump shrink, causing leakage, but the rubber "0" rings on the fuel injection nozzle can shrink, allowing fuel to dribble down into the cylinder, washing the cylinder out and diluting the oil. The result: the engine must be replaced.

All diesel stocks contain high concentrations of paraffin, with the low sulfur fuels containing the most. As the ambient temperature drops, solid wax crystals form in the fuel. The temperature at which these crystals form is the "Cloud Point." The crystalline formation continues as the temperature drops and the wax begins to collect on the fuel filter. Eventually, the wax build-up will choke the fuel supply, completely clogging the fuel filter. The "Cold Filter Plug Point" (CFPP) is the temperature at which the fuel becomes so viscous that it will barely allow the fuel to flow. At this point, filters are normally completely clogged and the equipment will no longer function.

Fuel Filters

Kerosene or gasoline is sometimes added to diesel to dilute its paraffin content and, therefore, the CFPP. However, this also reduces the BTU value and the lubricating properties of the fuel. The result is less power and reduced lubrication for the fuel injectors and the valves, which can eventually damage the engine. Algae or fungus feed on the wax, causing more problems than before. The wax or paraffin is less stable and will fall out of solution causing loss of BTU value and increased accumulation of sludge.

Low sulfur diesel does not burn as well, resulting in more soot in the oil. This means the oil gets thicker, darker and dirtier faster than before. The result is more frequent oil changes.  Less lubricity means more wear to the top cylinder area and fuel delivery  system.

Detergent

Although the diesel engine is the most efficient internal combustion engine in use today, deposit build-up can increase compression causing ignition to occur too soon. This creates a pre-ignition effect, which hinders the effectiveness of full combustion. Deposits can also occur on the fuel injectors, which impede fuel delivery. Instead of a vaporized mist that ignites readily at ignition, deposits on the injector tip can cause a stream of fuel that dribbles into the combustion chamber in a liquid rather than a vaporized state. Since the liquid will not burn, the raw unburned fuel leaves the engine through the exhaust system and appears as black smoke going out the stack. The wasted unburned fuel reduces power, performance and economy. DEE-ZOL PLUS contains deposit control agents, which remove deposits from the combustion chamber and injectors and keeps them clean for optimal performance.

Moisture Control

DEE-ZOL PLUS contains a moisture eliminator, which will disperse condensation and other free water from the fuel system. Because the water remains dispersed in a one micron size, it is carried along with the diesel fuel and passes through the spray nozzle (without harming the injector), into the combustion chamber where it subsequently leaves with the exhaust. Removal of freestanding water prevents microorganism growth. The organisms live in the water phase and feed on the diesel fuel. The algae cannot survive unless free water is present. DEE-ZOL PLUS will solve all moisture and microorganism problems.

Cetane Enhancement

DEE-ZOL PLUS contains PB4500 Power Booster which reduces the interfacial surface tension between fuel molecules and modifies them through the generation of free "radicals" that help keep the flame front stable thereby producing a more uniform burn. This results in a more even build-up in pressure and resultant increase in combustion efficiency. Because there is more complete combustion of the fuel, more power is delivered to the piston as it is driven down on the power stroke. This means less downshifting, more power and performance and better fuel mileage.

Additionally, since more of the fuel is being burned, less is going out the stacks. Most of the visual smoke from diesel exhaust is just raw unburned fuel. By promoting more complete combustion, DEE-ZOL PLUS can reduce emissions as high as 50% to 90%.

Fuel Stablizer

Since diesel fuel is a blend of many different hydrocarbons consisting of various sized colloidal particles, the small, less stable particles have a tendency to fall out of the solution. When they do, they unite with other similar sized less stable particles to form a particulate. The process continues until larger particles form a sludge that can clog fuel filters and ruin injectors. This sludge-forming tendency occurs in all diesel stocks regardless of how fast the fuel is consumed. This is especially true in low sulfur diesel and in fuel that sits for long periods of time. In many cases the problem becomes so severe that the old fuel has to be pumped out, disposed of and the tank cleaned, a very costly and time consuming process. DEE-ZOL PLUS prevents fuel stratification and eliminates sludge formation thereby retaining the BTU value in the fuel.

Seal Conditioner

The seal conditioner in DEE-ZOL PLUS prevents the shrinkage of fuel pump diaphragms, rubber “O” rings and other rubber fuel system parts.

Anti-Foam

Reduces fill time and increases storage capacity.

Anti-Gel

DEE-ZOL PLUS with Anti-Gel was the world's first multi-functional fuel additive containing a cold flow improver. The Anti-Gel in DEE-ZOL PLUS reduces the size of the wax crystals so that they will pass through the filter. This allows the fuel to flow and prevents clogging of the fuel filter. Diesel engine operators all over the world have benefited from the cold flow improver capabilities of DEE-ZOL PLUS with Anti-Gel.  It conditions the fuel for cold weather to -10 F.

Dosage

Add to fuel tank before refilling 1 ounce to 10 gallons diesel fuel: 1 quart to 320 gallons: 1 gallon to 1280 gallons. Double dose the first few tanks to help remove build-up.
